Dry Needling
Dry needling is a technique used by physical therapists for the treatment of pain and movement restrictions. The technique uses a “dry” needle without medication or injection, inserted through the skin in an area of a muscle (trigger point). Dry needling is not acupuncture. Dry needling is a part of modern Western medicine principles and is supported by research.
What is a trigger point?
A trigger point is a taut band of skeletal muscle within a large muscle group. Trigger points can be tender to the touch and touching them may cause pain to other parts of the body.
Why dry needling?
Dry needling is a technique used by physical therapists as a part of the patient’s overall treatment plan. Physical therapists use dry needling to help release or inactivate a trigger point to relieve pain and improve range of motion.
Physical therapists who perform dry needling have attended additional education and training in the procedure.
Dry needling is not typically covered by insurance and is considered an out of pocket expense in addition to the cost of the therapy appointment. Highpoint Therapy Services charges $40 per dry needling session.
